Once each player has two cards, the first round of betting starts. The bets are called “blinds” and must be placed in the pot by players to the left of the dealer. Then one more card is dealt face up – the “flop” – and another betting round begins.

Each player has the option to check (match the last bet) or fold. If a player wants to increase their bet they must raise. The first player to make a raise takes the entire pot/all bets.

As a beginner, it’s important to play only with money you can afford to lose. You should also keep track of your wins and losses so you can see how much money you’re winning or losing. Additionally, it’s important to study the way other players play and learn their tells. This includes studying their eye movements, idiosyncrasies, hand gestures, and betting behavior. Once you understand the tendencies of other players, you’ll be able to adapt your strategy accordingly.
